UCSF CHALLENGES OF MANAGING PAIN SERIES (ChaMPS) – ONLINE
UCSF CME COURSE #:  MED11005
CME/CE Information

Presented by the Mount Zion Campus Committee and UCSF PainCARE * in collaboration with the UCSF Fresno Office of Continuing Medical Education.

Program Series Title
UCSF Challenges of Managing Pain Symposia (ChaMPS)

Target Audience
Primary Audience:  Physicians and nurses (all medical specialties and subspecialties with emphasis on primary care, surgery, women’s health, anesthesiology, pain management, cancer/oncology, emergency medicine, geriatrics, HIV/AIDS, infectious diseases, neurology, oral/maxillofacial surgery, psychiatry, surgery, veterans care).  Secondary Audience:  Pharmacists, psychologists, physical therapists.

Objectives
The topics for each ChaMPS presentation address the wide spectrum of issues associated with the field of pain management and the diverse medical disciplines often involved in treating patients with acute and/or chronic pain.  At the completion of each of these individual educational activities, participants should be better able to respond to the following standards for pain management as outlined by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO):

  1. Recognize the right of patients to appropriate assessment and management of pain;
  2. Assess the existence and, if so, the nature and intensity of pain in all patients;
  3. Record the results of the assessment in a way that facilitates regular reassessment and follow-up;
  4. Determine and assure staff competency in pain assessment and management, and address pain assessment and management in the orientation of all new staff;
  5. Establish policies and procedures which support the appropriate prescription or ordering of effective pain medications;
  6. Educate patients and their families about effective pain management; and
  7. Address patient needs for symptom management in the discharge planning process.

Furthermore, planners hope that these programs will help participants better understand when to refer patients to physicians at specialty acute/chronic pain centers and when not, enabling practitioners to better identify and manage those patients with pain who can be treated in “front line” settings while also ensuring that patients with the most serious pain conditions are seen more quickly by highly trained pain management practitioners who are most able to handle their unique diagnostic and treatment needs.  Additional topic-specific session objectives will be shown on the opening slides presented at the beginning of each individual program video.

Anticipated Educational Outcomes
Planners anticipate that participants, after completion of this activity, will:

  1. Better appreciate the professional, ethical, and legal responsibilities to which they are subject when caring for patients with acute and/or chronic pain conditions; and
  2. Develop sufficient knowledge to fulfill these responsibilities through improved understanding of appropriate assessment, referral and/or prescribing, documentation, and follow-up procedures.

Date of Release, Expiration Date, Cost, and Time Required to Complete This Activity
Date of Release: October 1, 2007
Expiration Date: September 14, 2010
Cost: Free
(a public service provided by the Mount Zion Campus Committee and UCSF PainCARE)

Time Required to Complete the Activity:  1 hour for each individual ChaMPS session (3 hours total for the series)

CME/CE Credit
The University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine (UCSF) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

UCSF School of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 3.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.  Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

The American Nurses Credentialing Center accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ issued by organizations accredited by the ACCME.

CME is accepted by the California Board of Psychology for psychologists.  Psychologists are responsible for reporting their own activities to the California Psychological Association Accrediting Agency.

How to Obtain CME/CE Credit
In order to receive CME/CE credit for the online version of ChaMPS, the participant must submit a registration form to UCSF PainCARE by one of the following methods:

By E-mail Attachment:
PainCare@anesthesia.ucsf.edu
(Subject Line:  ChaMPS CME/CE)
OR By Mail
UCSF PainCARE
c/o UCSF Pain Management Center
2255 Post Street, Campus Box 1654
San Francisco, CA  USA   94143-1654

Upon receipt of the registration form, UCSF PainCARE will then provide the participant with a URL and log-in information, along with a post-test and activity evaluation form for each ChaMPS program.  The participant then views the individual CME/CE presentation and slides, completes the post-test and evaluation forms for the activity he/she has finished viewing, and returns these forms to UCSF PainCARE within 7-10 days after viewing the program via one of the methods shown above (e-mail or U.S. mail).

UCSF PainCARE scores the post-tests and evaluations, and tracks students’ participation.  (Evaluations are tracked separately to permit participants to respond anonymously if they so choose.)  Letters of credit stating the amount of credit earned are sent annually to each student in July following the close of the academic year.

Note:  Incomplete or illegible forms will not be processed for credit.  Students only receive credit for the sessions in which they have participated, only for viewing each session once, and only if they submit legible, complete paperwork (separate registration and post-test forms for each session for which they are requesting credit).  For example:

  • If a participant only wishes to view 2 of the 3 ChaMPS sessions (valued at 1.0 credit each), he/she will only receive 2.0 out of the maximum 3.0 credits available.
  • If a participant received credit for attending the live ChaMPS session at Herbst Hall or a teleconference site, he/she will not receive credit for also viewing the online version of the same presentation.

About Us and CME Contact Information
PainCARE, the Center for Advanced Research and Education at the University of California, San Francisco, was launched in 2004 with the help of a challenge grant from The Mayday Fund to expand upon the UCSF Pain Management Center’s nearly 20 years of caring for patients with the worst of the worst types of pain.  UCSF PainCARE was created to go beyond the concept of the traditional treatment or resource center by integrating the Pain Management Center’s state-of-the-art clinical care services at the UCSF Medical Center at Mount Zion with training and leadership development programs for healthcare professionals, patient education activities, basic and clinical research, and community, government, and media outreach efforts to foster true collaboration, locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally between patients, their families and other caregivers, researchers, policymakers, and the diverse range of healthcare providers inside and outside of UCSF involved in assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients with acute or chronic pain.

UCSF PainCARE’s mission is to be a true center of excellence in pain medicine.  By contributing to the overall body of research, an active program of educating professionals and lay people alike, and by providing unsurpassed patient care, we shall join with other policymakers to speak for those who are unable to speak for themselves, and change the face of pain from one of suffering to one of hope.

UCSF PainCARE is supported in part by a challenge grant from The Mayday Fund. UCSF PainCARE and the UCSF Pain Management Center were jointly named as a 2007 Clinical Center of Excellence by the American Pain Society, the first organizations west of the Mississippi to receive this honor.  This designation was awarded in recognition of PainCARE’s success in expanding educational opportunities for healthcare providers worldwide, as well as the for the outstanding level of care delivered by UCSF’s Pain Management Center.
