Curriculum

The curriculum may be completed entirely online from one's own home or office during times that are convenient to the schedule of today's busy healthcare practitioner, and is comprised of study guides, lecture notes, textbook and journal excerpts, quizzes, and online assessments. Online discussion groups offer students additional opportunities to interact with faculty and peers.

Four core units completed over three consecutive academic quarters provides a solid foundation in the fundamentals of pain management:




Introduction to Pain Management (Quarter 1, 1st Half):
Module 1: History/Concepts of Pain   Module 4: Multidisciplinary Pain Management
Module 2: Epidemiology of Pain   Module 5: Research Design and Biostatistics
Module 3: Classification of Pain   Module 6: Ethical Issues in Pain Management



Pain Mechanisms and Contributors (Quarter 1, 2nd Half):
Module 1: Peripheral Mechanisms of Pain   Module 4: Pain and Mood
Module 2: Spinal Mechanisms of Pain   Module 5: Pain and Cognitions
Module 3: Brain Mechanisms of Pain   Module 6: Environmental Contributors to Pain



Principles of Pain Treatment and Management (Quarter 2):
Module 1: Diagnostic Strategies   Module 4: Psychological Approaches
Module 2: Principles of Pharmacology   Module 5: Functional Rehabilitation
Module 3: Pharmacological Management   Module 6: Procedural Interventions



Pain Conditions (Quarter 3):
Module 1: Acute/Sub Acute Pain   Module 4: Neuropathic Pain Conditions
Module 2: Musculoskeletal Pain Conditions   Module 5: Cancer Pain
Module 3: Visceral Pain Module   6: Pain in the Elderly and in Children


Optional Live One Week Case Symposium

Students desiring face-to-face interaction with faculty and fellow students may opt to attend a live, one-week case symposium for an additional registration fee.  (Offered periodically for students completing the program.  Based on availability and interest of faculty and students.  Lodging and meals are extra.)
