UCSF Postgraduate Certificate in Pain Management / Online Program

Admission Requirements and Fees

Healthcare providers or other healthcare professionals with relevant degrees and professional experience who are willing to commit at least eight hours per week minimum to their coursework during each quarter*:

  • Physicians and Dentists:  MD, DO, DDS, or equivalent
  • Nurses:  PhD, MS, or BSN
  • Physician Assistants:  Master’s or Bachelor’s degree
  • Psychologists or Research Professionals:  PhD
  • Pharmacists:  PharmD or Bachelor’s degree
  • Chiropractors:  DC, MD, or equivalent
  • Physical Therapists:  DPT or Master’s degree
  • Others:  Pharmaceutical or other industry personnel, occupational therapists, biofeedback or rehab specialists, public health and other professionals with BS, MD, PhD degrees and work experience in relevant areas may also be accepted with faculty director’s prior approval.

* Most students devote 10-15 hours per week.

System Requirements:  Access to a multimedia computer (PC rather than Mac suggested), Internet Service Provider and web connection (high speed preferred). Minimum requirements: Sound card, speakers, CD-ROM drive, web browser supporting frames, plug-ins for Macromedia Authorware and Adobe Acrobat v7 or above. PCs: Windows 98SE, 2000, or XP (including Service Pack 2). Macs: Macintosh OS X 10.1 or higher. Further system details: http://cit.ucsf.edu/webct/browser.php.

English Language Requirements:  Applicants credentialed by institutions where the language of instruction was not primarily English must meet the same English language proficiency requirements as international students:

  • TOEFL (paper-based) 575 or better plus TWE (Test of Written English) at 4.5+, or
  • TOEFL (computer-based) 233 plus Essay Rating of 4.5.

Additional Suggestions:  UCSF recommends that you have your own copy of or online access to Bonica’s Management of Pain, Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.  (We provide access to this textbook online via UCSF’s Library as part of your tuition, but access may periodically be unavailable when larger numbers of users are accessing the text online.)

Acceptance into the Program:  Determined by review of the candidate’s application materials (each of the following items must be received by UCSF PainCARE on or before the application deadline):

  • Online Application Form + UCSF Graduate Application Fee ($60 U.S. Students; $80 International Students; non-refundable)
  • Official Transcript from the academic institution awarding your highest degree relevant to this program (unopened and displaying the university seal; see Education section of online application form for mailing instructions)
  • Official TOEFL scores report from Educational Testing Service (if required; see Education section of online application form for instructions)
  • Candidate’s CV (to be submitted as part of online application; see Education section of application form)
  • Recommendations (2 professional references minimum; see Education section of online application form for instructions and downloadable form)
  • Completed Terms of Service agreement (to be submitted as part of online application)

Tuition and Online Program Dates

Tuition:  $8,425 (US)
(Payable in full or in 3 installments on or before UCSF Registrar’s Office deadlines by credit card, check, or money order; includes access to journals, textbooks, and other resources available through the UCSF Library’s extensive system of online collections.)

Deadline to Apply: August 1, 2008
