About Us

The UCSF Postgraduate Certificate in Pain Management - Online Program is presented by PainCARE - the Center for Advanced Research and Education at the University of California, San Francisco*, and is an academic program of the UCSF School of Medicine's Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care offered through the UCSF Graduate Division.

UCSF PainCARE* was launched in 2004 with the help of a challenge grant from the Mayday Fund to expand upon the UCSF Pain Management Center's nearly 20 years of success in caring for patients with the worst of the worst types of pain. UCSF PainCARE was created to go beyond the concept of the traditional treatment or resource center by integrating the Pain Management Center's state-of-the-art clinical care services at the UCSF Medical Center at Mount Zion with training and leadership development programs for healthcare professionals, patient education activities, basic and clinical research, and community, government, and media outreach efforts to foster true collaboration locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally between patients, their families and other caregivers, researchers, policymakers, and the diverse range of healthcare providers inside and outside of UCSF involved in assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients with acute or chronic pain.

* UCSF PainCARE and the Pain Management Center were jointly named a Center of Excellence by the American Pain Society in 2007 in recognition of our educational initiatives and patient care expertise.

Our Mission

UCSF PainCARE's mission is to be a true center of excellence in pain medicine. By contributing to the overall body of knowledge through basic and clinical research, an active program of educating professionals and lay people alike, and by providing unsurpassed patient care, we shall join with other policymakers to speak for those who are unable to speak for themselves, and change the face of pain from one of suffering to one of hope.
