UCSF Medical Center - Pain Management Center

The UCSF PMC has been in existence since 1987, treating patients from all over the world with complicated and chronic medical, surgical, and neurological pain problems. This multidisciplinary treatment center, one of the last such centers remaining in Northern California, averages approx. 800 outpatient visits per month. The staff, based in the Dept of Anesthesia, consists of a variety of doctors and therapists with specialties in anesthesia, neurology, psychology, nursing, and PT.

In addition to the contributions made from each of the above specialties, the approach of the PMC emphasizes treating the patient as a whole, individual person. This is exemplified by the important role patient education plays in our philosophy. As an example of how strongly we feel about this, we encourage patients to attend a free, 4-part, repeating class on pain and coping, offered by members of the treatment staff during non-work hours.

The PMC is pleased to act as a specialty consultant for the numerous different types of pain for which we have expertise. These include, but are not limited to, various types of back pain, neuropathic (nerve) pain, cancer pain, musculoskeletal/rheumatologic pain, post-injury or surgical pain, and many others. A wide variety of treatment modalities are available, and each patient's case is personally reviewed by our multidisciplinary staff in order that the best combination of therapies is offered to each person.

Clinical research trials are currently being conducted at the PMC, and patients will be notified if they are eligible to participate. They should feel free to inquire about any current research being done. It should be noted, one does not have to be a patient at the PMC in order to participate in a research trial.
