Mount Zion History
1947 - 1957
- Architectural firm of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill plans five floor L-shaped expansion, with potential for two additional floors; ground-breaking ceremony held on January 17, 1948
- Building "A" built along Post Street and Building "B" built parallel to Divisadero Street are completed, December 1950
- Separate tumor institute, mid 1950's
- Mount Zion establishes home care program for the elderly: the first hospital-based program of its kind in the West and the second in the country, [1954].
- Board of Directors honors wishes of patients and visitors to construct a non-sectarian Meditation Room, the entrance to be off the 1600 Divisadero Street lobby, 1954
- Mount Zion develops neurological institute, adds open heart surgery, adds long term care division, establishes occupational therapy department, offers diagnostic services for out-of-town patients, 1952-62
- Mount Zion cardiologists, Meyer Friedman, MD and Ray Rosenman, MD begin research in risk factors for coronary disease, eventually defining a behavioral syndrome called the "Type A" behavior pattern, mid-1950's
